Red Square

Red Square

In Russian it is called Krasnaya Ploshchad, and in old Russian the word krasnaya meant "beautiful", not only "red".

The square was once a centre for markets and public celebrations, and over time it became the historic and political heart of Russia.

Around Red Square you will find:

St Basil's Cathedral — Russia's most famous symbol. Its colourful domes look like flames, making it one of the most distinctive buildings in the world.

The Kremlin — the seat of the Russian government. Its red walls and historic towers look directly onto the square.

The Spasskaya Tower, home of the famous clock that rings in the New Year in Russia; its chimes are broadcast on every Russian TV channel.

GUM — a luxury 19th-century shopping arcade with a glass roof that gives it a beautiful classic European feel.

Events on Red Square never stop: New Year celebrations with a giant tree, a winter market and an ice rink, followed by Chinese New Year festivities and many festivals throughout the year.

Red Square brings Moscow's main landmarks together in one place. It is perfect for photos, combining Tsarist history, the Soviet era and modern Russia in a single view.
